Surgery and Another Surgery

We have a little update – it’s not much but it’s something!

I was discharged on Thursday because my surgery was moved to Monday (tomorrow). Last week I received many labs – an echo, biopsy, EKG, CT, Chest X-ray, bone scan and a PET scan. We have not received the results from these scans, therefore we do not have the official results of the biopsy, but the preliminary results is Ewing’s Sarcoma. The labs we want to focus on is the bone scan and PET scan, this will tell us if cancer has spread anywhere else. Prayers that cancer has not spread and that it is only localized in my leg. While I was home I had the opportunity & cut off 9 inches of my hair to donate to children because it’s not like I’m going to need it anyways – so that is why you may see photos of me with short hair!

The reason we have moved my surgery to tomorrow is that we have the opportunity to remove one of my ovaries and harvest the eggs. Since the chemo I will receive is very intense, it will destroy my eggs in my ovaries to where it is very unlikely I would be able to have kids in the future. Being able to have kids in the future is something that is extremely important to me and my family; so we have decided that while I have surgery tomorrow to receive my double port, I will also have one of my ovaries removed to harvest those eggs. This will give me the opportunity to have children in the future when I am ready which is a HUGE praise to God! At one point I was told that I would not get the chance to harvest my eggs because it would take too long, but here we are doing it tomorrow!

Tomorrow’s surgery is at 6:30 AM (wowza, remember I do not enjoy mornings). They will have me ready to go at 5:00 AM which means I am going to sleep after I post this. Prayers would be that this surgery goes smoothly and I heal quickly. Crazy enough I have never had surgery before, so I am not sure what to expect, but prayers for my anxious heart would be appreciated. After I have surgery, I will recover at home for a week because the ovarian surgery will make me a bit more sore than the port one will, so they want to make sure I recover fully before chemo starts. After that, sometime next week, I will start my first round of chemo in the hospital.

Thank you to everyone is who is constantly praying. Again, I am so overwhelmed with the way The Lord has provided peace and love during this time and I know He will continue to do so. (side note – since I will be bald soon, please comment some fun wig colors you think I should try because now is the time to have fun with some new hair!!)

  4. Melissa, I am a friend of Kristen Walker. I admire your bravery and determination as you walk this journey of cancer. I am a 9 year breast cancer survivor. You will be blessed and amazed at the people that come out of the wood work to offer help and assistance during this time. Accept the help because your focus should be on getting better. My prayers are with you, your family, and all of the health care providers.

  5. Melissa, I worked with Kristen a long way back–before she had kids. She and Brian are a such a wonderful example of a couple dedicating their lives to serving Christ and raising their family to do so as well. She has shared your blog and I have joined so many others that are praying for you as you fight this cancer battle. And for your family & friends that love you so much and are standing by your side through every step. Thank you for sharing your story–may you be blessed greatly for it. Your witness and testimony is being shared far and wide I am sure.
